How to choose a fridge for storing supplies

What to look for in a small fridge used for supplies rather than food, and what to buy with it.

Short answer

For anything that has to stay at a steady fridge temperature, choose a small compressor fridge with an adjustable thermostat, and add a separate thermometer. Thermoelectric "beverage coolers" cool only a fixed amount below room temperature, so on a warm day they drift; the dial on any fridge is a setting, not a measurement.

Compressor or thermoelectric?

A compressor fridge cools to the temperature you set. A thermoelectric cooler only pulls a fixed number of degrees below the room, so as the room warms, the inside warms with it. If the contents have a required storage range, that difference is the whole decision.

Size it for the shelf, not the box

  • Measure the interior height against your tallest item, not the outside of the fridge
  • Check whether the shelves move or are moulded into the liner
  • Leave the clearance the manufacturer asks for around the vents
  • Remember a door shelf is the warmest place inside any fridge

Buy the thermometer at the same time

The dial inside a fridge is a setting. A separate thermometer is what tells you the shelf is actually in range, and it is the cheapest item in this guide. Put it where your items sit, not at the front near the door, and read it daily for the first week to learn how the unit behaves.

When a logger is worth it

Buy a logger when you need to prove what happened rather than see what is happening: an overnight failure, a power cut, or a slow drift warmer over a month. If you only need to confirm the fridge is running correctly, a min/max thermometer already answers that.

Common questions

Can I use the kitchen fridge instead?

You can, but it is opened all day, which swings the temperature, and supplies end up next to food. A small dedicated unit avoids both problems.

Where should the thermometer go?

Next to the items you care about, on the same shelf. Temperature varies between the door, the middle and the back wall.

Do I need both a thermometer and a logger?

No. A thermometer answers "is it right now", a logger answers "was it right while I was away". Many people start with the thermometer and add a logger only if they need records.
